Whether they just have some difficulty getting out of dog beds, or they are going for a ride in a car, older dogs need to be protected from harm and there are a few things that a concerned pet owner should keep in mind when they are caring for their beloved friend. As these amazing creatures get older their ability to respond slows down, much like all of us, and their eyesight gets poor. With diminished strength and stamina it is important that you do what you can to ensure that they live to a good age. Here are some suggestions as to what products you can use to help your aging pet.

• When their day starts they will be getting out of dog beds that should be designed in such a way that is comfortable, yet easy and safe for them to get up from.
• When it comes to the outdoors there are many options that you can utilize which can be of great use. There are orange vests that your furry friend can wear that will ensure that others can see him or her, even though they may not be able to see someone coming.
• There are some great leashes that you can buy also that can be of use. There is a bottom up leash that supports under the back side of your dog. This enables them to have better support while they are walking, particularly if they are disabled or have trouble with their back legs.
• You can also purchase a retractable leash. This gives you the ability to let your dog roam a little, but also gives you the option of assisting him and keeping him from harm, should he fail to see danger. In addition to the leash, there are specialized flashing safety collars that can help your animal stay visible for as far as one mile.
• When you are traveling there are some wonderful options available that can give you control over your dog's safety. This includes having a car barrier that will serve as a way to protect both your animal from sliding into the front seat should you need to suddenly brake, and it keeps them from getting involved with the actual driving of the car, such as getting under your feet.
• You can even install a doggy seat belt that will typically attach to your existing buckle. There are other models that will actually attach to your car. The benefit to this is not only safety, but it minimizes their ability and desire to jump back and forth from front seat to back seat. It is also possible to buy good convenient dog carriers and dog seats, something very similar to a car seat for a child.

The important thing is that when it comes to your pets you do whatever is necessary and possible to keep them as active and comfortable as you can. Undoubtedly they gave you years of love, service, and companionship and they deserve to have the best as they reach an older age, whether that is special dog beds or a comfortable dog seat.

Are you getting ready to pack up the kids and the car and head to Grandma's house this holiday weekend? If your furry family members get to go, too, these tips will make the trip more pleasant for you and for Fido.

Don’t do anything new. If your dog is not used to car travel, acclimate him first. Start with short trips around the block and slowly graduate to hour-long neighborhood and highway cruises. Also, go to fun places like the dog park or to visit friends. You want your dog to think that trips in the car are fun and that not all of them end up at the vet's office!

Use a safety harness or crate. Decide where your pooch will ride and consider a pet vehicle safety harness or a soft dog crate. Crate training your dog weeks before your trip will make everything easier because if you are forced to leave your dog unattended in a hotel room, leaving him in a crate is the best option (if the establishment allows you to leave your pet alone in the room; some do not). Having a portable dog crate at your destination is convenient as well. It not only provides a place where your dog can feel safe, but it will provide you with peace of mind knowing where he is at all times when you are not around. More tips here.

Are you thinking about adding a new puppy to your household but a little worried how the faithful canine companion you've had for years might react?

The key is to let your "old" dog know he is NOT being replaced and allow him to gradually get used to the new puppy. One of the best ways to introduce two dogs that don't know each other is to keep the puppy in a separate room from your dog with the door closed.  Both can sniff under the door to get used to each other's scent. After a few days, use a pet gate instead of closing the door. The puppy and dog can now see each other as well as sniff each other.  If you are crate training the puppy you can use the crate instead of the pet gate.

If your older dog starts to get upset, don't scold him, just remove him from the puppy.  The next time have some of your dog's favorite treats in your hand.  Praise the puppy and give the dog a treat.  The dog will learn to associate the puppy with treats. Article continued...
